Mitre square edge worktop?

As subject really, SWMBO wants square edge worktop this time and having looked at various examples of both, I can't decide whether it looks better mitred or butted. What does the panel think?

It's a square edged gloss sort of black "marble" effect she's looking at

- if that helps ;)

To me worktop mitres look wrong because they use more material and give you an unneccesarily long joint that has to be perfect. As it has no benefits over a butt joint, there seems little point

Maybe Ok for square edged w/tops but what about round edged ones ...????? How do you get round that .?? Stuart

Use a router and a worktop cutting jig which gives you a mitre in the round edged section and a butt joint for the remainder. Search the group archives for more info or look at the Trend website for details of their jigs and how to use them.

Yep. In theory you can avoid the router/jig routine by just 45 deg cutting 2 bits of worktop (assuming you have the extra length required) but in practice it's a bugger to get such a long joint lined up and fixed. I've seen it done, and to me it just looks naff, mainly because technically it doesn't make sense.
