Missing i-phone

Not mine! I don't aspire to such technology.



The catering dept. has been gifted used handsets by our daughters who have organised services etc. for her.



Very rarely leaves the house but there was a gathering of retired teachers at a local pub, Thursday last week...



Nothing was mentioned until the following Monday when it became apparent she was searching pockets, bags etc.



Youngest daughter took over notifying etc. but it was soon clear that you can't locate a phone that has a flat battery.



Next thing is a new (cheap) i.phone arrives by post followed by daughter trying to set it up.



So. Questions. Is it possible to retain the number when the SIM card is lost with the handset?



Given a new number is required, can cloud saved data still be retrieved?

Yes. Contact your network (O2, Vodafone, etc), tell them the phone was lost, and ask them to issue a new SIM card on your existing account. You may have to do some security things to prove you're the owner of the old SIM, or they may just send the new SIM straight off to the registered address.

This will also disconnect the old SIM so miscreants can't make calls or receive security code texts intended for you.

If the phone had access to your email, I'd also change the password on your email account(s), especially if you used it without a passcode/fingerprint/face unlock.

Yes, on iPhones this is 'iCloud'. If you log in to the new phone with the same 'Apple Account' (formerly 'Apple ID') as the old phone, it should automatically sync all the cloud data, including apps that were installed on the old one.

When you're in you probably want to disconnect the old phone from the Apple account - you can lock it so that it can't be accessed.

If you use other cloud accounts (eg Microsoft) you can install their apps, log in and it'll sync that data too.

OK Theo. That answers all I need to know. I vaguely think the provider is Gif Gaff but I am trying to keep out of the way:-) She can use her i-pad for her social media stuff and we still have a land line.
