Does anyone know of maths sites for gettin quick answers? trying to work out how much salt falls out of an hurricane not very successfully:


2.1*10000000000000000*37.5 = 7.875e+17 WTF?

Here is where I started:

IIRC salt content of sea water is 35.5grams/litre. But it could be different during hurricane conditions. I don't suppose there is any way of knowing.



For the idiots who want to answer silly questions without saying anything here is moron taster: How much salt is in a typical hurricane?


Rain isn't normally whipped up seawater, it's evaporated seawater.

I was just thinking that. The evaporation rate merely makes any body of water more salty, hence it stays in the sea. Obviously there are wind distributed sea water effects like storm surges which breach flood defences, but most rain is surprisingly unsalty, but can contain other pollutants of course, from the air.

Except of course, hurricanes don't deposit salt water. The energy driving a hurricane, warm sea water, causes huge evaporation from the sea surface, but the salt remains in the sea. There may be coastal deposition due sea-spray being driven some distance inland by the very strong wind, but that's a different matter.

A tornado over the sea would suck up sea water because it's much more localised and intense, but that's not a hurricane.

What happens following an hurricane is that a huge amount of heat is dropped below the surface this has only become visible with the advent of tracking stations such as the picture only Nullschool.

1.3 x 10^15 cubic inches) per day taken from some 400 mile diameter leaves an astonishing amount of salt falling below the surface. If this is still at some 29 degrees Centigrade it means a continuing heat supply going elsewhere. But when it starts using euler numbers to explain it I kind of lose track.

But you can literally see where the track has gone for several days after the storm ends. I just wondered where it goes.

Surely, only the salt which has come out of 1.5 cm of water. Sea water is far from saturated with salt. Even in coastal shallows of say 100 metre depth the "extra" salt will make damn all difference to anything.

Which I actually found quite interesting and potentially useful if one gets the format right. I wasn't criticising you. Apologies if that's how it came over. Incidentally, did you do a 'manual' calculation to confirm the result was correct? (I didn't, but I'm eternally sceptical...)

I note that line 5, table 1 says 'sea salt cm^-3 of air (µµg) 8.87'. So that's ~9 picograms of salt per cubic centimetre of air, by any standards a pretty small amount, trivial when compared with the salt content of sea water, and is almost certainly the result of spray being carried upwards from breaking waves, either out at sea or coastal, and spread throughout the atmosphere.

I had to check how it would interpret the "665 km ^2" term, left to its own devices it took 665 as the number already expressed in units of km^2, it took the extra brackets to make it calculate the radius in km squared

It's pretty good at keeping track of and converting the fundamental dimensions of units.

I couldn't make out what ten to the whatever meant is that like ten thirtee n or whatever times? But then Google refused to deal with ^n as "to the power of n" after giving me such an answer then after me putting all the noughts in as far as I und erstood them.

So when it came up with "e" I thought since there isn't anyone capable of h elping me in uk.sci.meteorology (where even the meteorologists can't distin guish between area vs volume) I thought I would try my hand at this place I even laid a false track down the garden path for the turnips field. Much g ood it did.

Anyway there are two storms at sea now so if you keep an eye on their marke rs you will see how they look a few days past the sell by date:
