Lump of steel…

Amongst some of my father’s old tools I found a lump of steel.

It measures exactly 8” x 1.5” x 13/16ths of an inch. I’m sure it was just “acquired” by my father and it was never used for anything in my lifetime.

What is it and how would it be used? I’m guessing it’s used in engineering measurement somehow.

'Reference blocks' were used to scribe marks on items, for one thing.

HSS tool blank for a lathe?

One of a pair of parallels (mostly) for use in a milling machine?

That would have been my guess as well...
