Little Rascal not charging fully

My friend and neighbour has a Liteway 4 Plus mobility scooter. After months of regularly trying to get the original battery to charge he got a new battery from a local dealer. Now he can get the battery to charge just enough to get the Rascal from his garage to his patio door

50 yards away and back before it runs out of juice. I know little about such things and he knows even less. At the front end there is a display with a red yellow and green arc. A day long charging session has the pointer only half way across the green "charged" mark on the dial, which would leave him only a tenth of the way to the Co-op. Any suggestions welcome.

Have you a multimeter? Measure the voltage across the batteries, when not on charge. Measure it again when on charge, then report back with the values. The meter needs to be set on DC, 20v, or perhaps 200v ranges

Thanks Harry, I've got a multimeter on order.

I would suspect the charger built into the scooter.

One way to check would be to remove the battery from the scooter and charge it up using a stand alone battery charger. Then refit and see how charged the scooter thinks it is.

A multimeter (as already suggested) should also show how fast it is charging and what the battery voltage is.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice on this. I got the multi meter which I'm sure will be useful. Unfortunately the job became more complicated than expected partly because access to the battery terminals for the process suggested was too difficult. So the problem has been taken back to the dealer for a solution.
