Lime plastering - How Much!!!

I live in a 100 year old detached house. Most of the damp problems have been solved over the years and particularly by the installation of a positive pressure loft fan (despite what I was told here).



However, some residual problems remain on the gable ends. A damp consultant diagnosed that the original lime plaster had been covered with gypsum plaster and that this, together with acrylic paint had prevented the bricks from breathing. The only solution was to remove the gypsum plaster and any plasterboard and to re-plaster the lot with lime plaster.



I've gone along with this so far. However, I've just received a quote to apply this solution to one bedroom of £3,600. At this rate the total cost for the whole house would be more than £14,000.



I'm not doubting the integrity of the consultant or plasterer but this seems too much. Is there a cheaper solution?

DIY?

I'm sure this is not the cheapest, but eg:

per 2.2m2 coverage at 12mm thick, or 8.5mm2 for a 3mm skim. Do the sums.

Maybe DIY the coarse plastering and pay a pro to skim it after?

I suppose you could also dot and dab (with lime) wood fibre insulation board (which is breatheable) and then skim with lime. Not sure if that would work out cheaper, but might if the walls are bumpy.

Don't forget to paint with breatheable paint afterwards.

One 9mm base coat, leave 5 days, second 9mm base coat, leave 5 days, then 2 finish layers 2mm each.

Chatting recently with a lime plasterer doing some work at my sister's - he said £100/m2 (Gloucs). Not sure now if that was back to brick or skim.

How far do the gable ends extend over the walls?

Much of the cost would be in the removal and disposal of the original plaster. Can you consider doing this part yourself?

I should have mentioned that I'm 81.

I've cleaned the filter on the positive pressure loft fan and turned up the 'trickle' speed. I'll see how that works over the winter.

Needless to say £3,600 boy isn't getting the job.

If you ignore the cost of the materials.

In the video I posted they suggested 2 off 9 mm base coats and 2 off 2 or 3 mm skim coats. Based on another post in this thread the materials could cost £30 per m2.
