LED view port

I have a Baxi Boiler. It has its controls and status LED under a removable metal cover

Strangely they have no plastic lenses or viewing in that cover to be able to see the e status LED's so you have to remove cover if you wish to check status.

Its jut 3 x LED .... 4-5 mm holes would be enough to show the LED illuminated, flashing or not.

Anybody know if you can buy clip in 'lenses' or similar.

Cut a hole in the cover.

Drill hole in the right place in the plastic case and then cast clear epoxy against sellotape. You want a small piece of the tape in the middle of a strip so that it is shiny side against the hole.

A blob on the inside and you are almost there. Or you could buy small perspex bits to fit in the holes but I expect minimum order is 100 off. (or make your own out of some perspex rod offcut)

Yes ... but then want to put something there rather than just a hole.

Similar idea using very cheap fibre optic cable

Try = Optical Cable Toslink, Digital Audio Fibre Optic TOS Lead

A very cheap option if you can mechanically mount/position it.

It's thinner and more flexible than the tube shown in the Youtube video.

Using a pair of scissors cut a short length of this cable (for other readers - it works without polishing the ends) Shine the led in one end and you will see it at the other end

I've just tried with a spare cable I've had for some time. I cut a 6 inch length from the centre of the cable and held it to the front of a

5mm red LED. At the the other end was a very bright light about 0.5mm in diameter.

These are approx 10mm diameter at the back and fit over a 5mm diameter LED

The light out of the pointy bit is approx 0.5mm diameter

From the top of a LED to the end of the pointy bit is 18mm

You can pass light along meters of this VERY flexible cable so your "external" display could be mounted to the side casing avoiding drilling of holes in the boiler. The cable is 4mm diameter and 4mm hole in a bit plastic panel simply with cable pushed through could look quite neat without any bezels, clips or additional lens etc.

Note: There are also TOSLINK optical adapters to join two cables which may give you additional options at the LED end of the cable to allow fixing with a blob of hot glue.
