`key` for gloss paint

Aug 10, 2011 4 Replies

I have acres of internal glossing to do, I assume I need to `key` it before applying undercoat. Is there an easy/quick way to `key it` I dont fancy using a sander because of the dust it will create. How lightly / severe has the keying to be?

I use a damp sanding sponge. Flexible, washable, no dust.

And wash down with "Sugar Soap".

A sander will do perfectly well.

Very lightly and very quickly, you only need to make a pass with some good red paper. Give it a bang occasionally to drop the dust everywhere You will be finished and drinking a cup of tea in an hour.

You also need to flatten any imperfections too, to get a decent finish, it is not just a matter of keying the surface.
