Joining two rods together

I am trying to join two aluminium or stainless rods together end to end. something which i can unscrew at the ends to make them shorter after use.

whats the screw called. its to make a long net and the handle needs to able to extend down a pier.

Could you use drain rods? Save you having to manufacture them.
