Is new consumer unit necessary?

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I will take the necessary with me to guide him on the correct way to DIY the new (replacement) heater and take a suitable length of cable just in case we (he) find the existing cable is damaged. Might as well throw in a new switch just in case the old one is also found to be faulty :-)

Bugger - we all forgot about the possibility of a faulty switch! I agree, it is a good idea to take one with you just in case it is needed.
