Immersion heater controls

As Andy says, just get a thermometer with a temperature probe on a lead, and put the probe inside the cylinder jacket.

Some aluminium tape will hold the probe on fine.

cheers, Pete.

Agreed. In addition, simple control systems work fine on systems where there is large inertia and relatively little input. That's what hot water cylinders are. Where there is more input and less inertia a more advanced control system becomes useful to prevent excessive overshoot. That is a simplification, but it serves.

If one is interested one can have such a fitting fitted at the time of manufacture, a tube which goes into the cylinder and which will take a variety of temperature probes. Then one can have a reading locally or at a controller.

They are not fitted to bog standard cylinders because most people don't care what the precise temperature is. However, they are an option when one has a cylinder made.

It's not worth fitting after manufacture, but one can remove a little of the insulation, polish the surface of the cylinder and attach a probe th that. Not quite as accurate but good enough for many things.
