ideas sought for mounting boards to concrete sectioned garage

Hi all we have a 'Compton' garage - the common style made of concrete sections, assembled under a steel section roof. It has served us reasonably well for some 20+ years.



One pain about this style is that it is not easy to mount to the wall. Compton sell some angle iron shelf fittings, but that is a bout all.



I have a 'need' to fit some OSB to part of one wall, to support some other fittings. I would be interested in ideas to mount this kind of thing to a garage with this construction.



Some thoughts: - I have had poor results trying to use gripfill etc. with the concrete section - I only want to mount OSB sized something like 4ft x 2ft, not much larger sheets - there are only very limited fixing points - coach bolts between each section at ?600mm? intervals, or occasional cutouts in the steel roof section.



I know that people have fully lined these kinds of garages, with Celotex and OSB etc. - I don't want to go that far. But I'm thinking that others must have done something similar, and am looking for inspiration.



(current thoughts include some angle brackets down from the roof section, to which the OSB could be screwed. But it will be messy...)

Hmm, possibly answering my own question ...

I have now discovered 'garage lining clips', which might be exactly what I want ;-)

Butter the back of the OSB with low expansion "board fix" foam, dampen the wall, push it into place and prop it for a bit. It will conform to an uneven surface, and sticks like the proverbial to a blanket!

I assume that each wall section consists of a number of framing members (vertical and horizontal) with thin set-back panels such that the whole thing is flat on the outside. If so, why not fix some battens to these thin panels with a thickness which makes them level with the framing members. I suggest screwing the battens from the outside, using screws with metal and rubber washers similar to those used for roofing panels. For belt and braces you could also use Sticks like Sh*t to stick the battens to the panels and also to provide an additional seal round the screw holes.

You can then screw your OSB to the battens without the framing members getting in the way.

Hi John That is an idea, thanks, although I will have to work out how to 'prop it for a bit'. Would this result in a panel able to carry a reasonable load?

It should so - especially if the board goes down to the floor. The technique is quite often used on plasterboard in place of "dot 'n' dab" these days.

The "prop" bit is only to make sure the edges set at the same level if doing multiple boards at once. It goes off in 10 mins or so. In a garage, and long batten that could be sprung in between the walls should do the trick.

Hi John Thanks for this. In fact I have a mild preference for the OSB to

*not* go to the floor; this, and the fact that I just found that I already have a small stash of flat jointing plates that I think I can press into service, are leading me to the other approach; these plates attached to the coach screws; then some 1.5" or so square timber lengths screwed vertically to that, and then the OSB onto that.

This will lose a bit more space than the OSB straight onto the concrete approach, but I can live with that.

I am sure I will find a use for this low expansion foam method elsewhere

- I want to put up a board for a French Cleat system - so I am watching the video with interest.

Hi Roger Thanks, but the construction is not like that at all. It is entirely of concrete sections, bolted together with a steel frame and roof on top. The sections are not practically drillable.

I am sure some people do something similar to what you suggest, but with Celotex panels to fill the 'depth', and then fully board on top - but that is not what I am looking to do here.

Yes, it's a good video - a lot of the tips/tricks I learnt the hard way ;-)

In fact I've used ordinary expanding foam for low risk fixing like skirting boards - seems to work well.

You can add angle brackets, flat face outwards, to the section joining bolts.

Yes, that was a thought I had originally. But I feel that then screwing to those would be tricky to get right.

The garage lining clips I have now found seem to be a better plan, to me:

Followup to my original query:

I ended up repurposing some standard 75mm tee brackets to use as 'lining clips' - I drilled an extra hole for the 8mm bolts that are used to hold the concrete sections together, and put a shallow (150 degree) bend on each.

I then cut down some roofing battens to make some timber lengths around

25mm x 25mm. I screwed these vertically to the tee brackets, against the edges of the sections.

I was then able to screw through the OSB sheet I wanted to use as a panel, onto the lining battens.

It's not a super-elegant solution but is cheap and cheerful and has allowed me to to mount a vertical bike rack, which is where I started from.

If I were to do this again I would probably also use some adhesive in a cartridge to ensure the battens are secured to the concrete and don't 'flap about' at all. I did look at my selection of old cartridges but they have all cured ;-(. There is very little play in any case.
