I think I was right to be concerned about the potential for burst pipes

Apparently NI, Wales and Scotland are experiencing thousands of burst pipes. At some businesses, shut for the Christmas, water is pouring out of burst pipes and no one knows. The insurance costs are going to run into millions.

Don't get ones knickers in twist.

Nothing new in that, just think of 1963, 1983 and 1985 and there were thousands of bursts then - as for insurance claims for the damage, I bloody well hope that the insurance companies have now got their act together to investigate every claim thoroughly and reject *AND* prosecute those that falsely claim. [1]

[1] For false claims, just think of the recent *75* claims by members of the English Defence League for whiplash injuries in a bus accident - but the bus could only seat *52* passengers and in reality, there were only *25* passengers actually on the bus at the time of the very minor collision.

I've had two freezes of a main riser (the same one) and four drain freezes in the last few weeks. Fortunately (fingers very crossed) nothing burst so far.

I that's true, I hope the "extras" get done for fraud.

Just gone looking - the original report was in the Bile Duct, so there's little chance of it being true. Though I wouldn't be surprised, if my understanding of the EDL is even half-way accurate.

Ther's an Urban Legend to similar effect running round in the industry about a bus in, as it happened, Liverpool(1). When asked for their tickets as proof of being there, 90% of the claimants shuffled off in an embarassed manner.....

Not sure what the "Bile Duct" is [a link please], but here's link to the story that I read - admittedly one should accept everything that's written the (or on the internet). ;-)

it was a 57 seater (not 52).

There was one in New York IIRC. Bus ran into something, which resulted in many tens of claims for whiplash. The bus hadn't actually been in service at the time and was completely empty except for the driver.

of the supply has run out. I was in Dublin not long before Christmas doing some presentations, and there was some problem there too which meant they had only a few days water supply left at the time.

Sorry, it's what the Daily Mail is called in our house.

Also a Glaswegian version. Police arrive to find a full stationary bus after a RTA. A PC announces that the bus has CCTV and the passengers on the bus at the time of the accident can be identified. Most shuffle off.

The cold weather is also usually the season of gas explosions as frost heave damages pipes or leaking gas is unable to escape through the frozen ground surface and seeps into basements. ISTR that the Putney explosion was during frosty weather. I'm surprised there haven't been any big bangs, yet.
