I need to remove some redundant pipework and temporarily plug the bits I can't deal with at the moment, but I don't know what size they are. The approx external pipe diameters are 1.7" (43mm) and 1.3" (34mm) - how can I identify them?
How to identify iron pipe sizes?

Sound like 1 1/4" and 1" respectively
Thanks! I don't know why Google didn't find it, but that's one to bookmark
Iron pipe size is determined by the inside diameter.

Certainly is.
Did you notice who claims the Copyright?
I don't think Biggles is involved ...
Shows a nice sense of humour, though.
Seems legit
More accurately, the Nominal Bore. The actual inside diameter varies according to the Schedule (wall thickness) while keeping the outside the same for that NB.

That only makes it better!
