Actually, the objection is usually that no-one *locally* wants it, but that it will draw in large amounts of non-local traffic, thus causing chaos. Thus the two objections can be consistent with one another.
Talking of which, the Sainsbury's just down the road from you in Richmond Road, Kingston, turned out *not* to create traffic chaos. But only because no-one wanted it; it has been a commercial disaster.
