Compared with say uk.politics.misc, uk.d-i-y is amazingly uncluttered with spam and loony anti-social stuff. How come this is so, given the group is unmoderated?

It does have its moments, particularly with drug sellers and people selling cracked credit card details, and lots of off topic posts. It often depends on the server you are using and its filters for certain groups, or you can find that some spammers get better results on some groups, so tend to send their stuff there. You will find lots of webcam and phone sex ones on many groups, but seldom on others, so it has to be either that the senders feel its pointless sending to some groups and better on others. No It does not seem to be all groups with sex in their names that get spammed, soI'd imagine somebody is seeing which gives the best results for whatever scam or service they are pushing.

Of course using clients and not Google, as many do, means you can filter the idiot factor out as well. Some Trolls are entertaining but the potty mouthed uncouth ones should not be replied to, it only encourages them. Brian

TBH there is relatively little in most of the uk groups I read - it might be because some of the spammers are smart enough to realise that targeting a uk specific groups is less productive, or perhaps the spam is quickly lost on groups with lots of real posts.

Cleanfeed for me takes care of a lot of spam, but ironically your message was followed up by some 'drugs' spam, which has been increasingly common of late. All of the current batch seems to be from gmail addresses, so we might get banned by Google Groups as has happened to other groups.

As far as the loonies go, it got very bad around the EU referendum but seems to have settled down.

If you want a group full of spam, see sci.crypt. I saw the number of messages there one day was 25K, then a few days later 40K. Somebody must be going nuts. (for decades it's been inhabited by fruitcakes, so not much lost there)

The Google system produced horrible non-standard messages that screwed up easy reading, and it seems to be where all the spammers and morons live. I wonder where your spam comes from - I don't get any here (not in this group). Maybe my longish bozo list stops it?
