How Bad Is Water Pollution in Australia? August 15, 2022 As per a study, the primary type of pollution is plastic pollution. And it is estimated as 4,000 tiny plastics per square kilometer of marine atmosphere.



This impacts both the marine ecosystem and the dependent communities that are directly or indirectly dependent on oceans for their food.



Besides plastics, other contaminants in the water bodies of Australia include pesticides, herbicides, metals, terrigenous sediments, and debris.



Further, according to an environmental pollution report, the coastal rivers and estuary have been subjected to pollution since 2011, and the condition is moderate to poor. Most developed estuaries are the center of pollution in eastern states.



Its impact is directly on the aquatic ecosystem. Some of the effects of water pollution issues in Australia include;


  • Ingestion of toxic materials by shorebirds, turtles, and other marine organisms.
  • Extensive coral bleaching leads to the deterioration of coral ecosystems.
  • Kelp forest loss .
  • Destruction of habitats; sometimes the exclusive ones.
  • Increased mortality among invertebrates.
  • Bioaccumulation of toxic microplastics.

Some reports show that about 5000–15000 turtles have been trapped in pollutants in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The same happens at every other water body.

Have you been keeping up on the plastics file ?

You should.

Plastics issues, originally started at normal scale. A fishing buoy made of plastic and cut loose from netting, was an eyesore. And giant patches of garbage (gyre) would collect with tons and tons of the stuff. Right now, there's at least one whole ship, pulling that s*it out of the ocean. But where can they stick it, after it comes aboard. The story does not end, with the gatherings step. It needs to be burned at high temperature... to make *CO2* :-)

The plastic is breaking into smaller and smaller pieces.

At one size of plastic piece, the above metric ("per square kilmeter") is still meaningful. You measure the size of "objects" in a square area. Divers measure off squares (say 10 meters by 10 meters) and then they count the items found.

But as time has passed, the detectable pieces of plastic are smaller now.

There was a picture not too long ago, of some "murky water". The plastic particles are now small enough to stay in solution, and tiny enough to interact with light.

They have been detected... everywhere. In the arctic. In the air floating around. In the ocean. In the water supply.

*In bottles of sparkling fresh bottled water* This means it is even escaping the usage of naive filtration systems.

Phthalates are what the coating is on Saran wrap. Or rather, it used to be the coating. It's a chemical which is lipid soluble. It's a plasticizer. The question the other day, about "what is this material on my Perspex cabinet", that could have been a phthalate compound.

I don't know why a person would select Australia for an article, except if that's where the scientist happens to be headquartered.

What are we doing about it ? Well, nothing really.

One thing I find impressive, is the sheer size of some of the plastic waste. A team on the west coast were doing beach cleanup, and they found a series of plastic cubes about six foot on edge in the ocean. Have you lost your plastic cube ? I found it for you. I presume it "fell off the back of the truck, a number of times, until the truck was empty" :-)

If you're going to pollute... do it in style. Go out, with a bang-bang-bang.

Now if you excuse me, I have to go poop out some plastic cubes.
