House Renovation

Are there any decent web sites (or books) that deal with house renovation that can be recommended? TIA Jim

I don't know about websites, but pop into your local large(ish) newsagent and pick up a copy each of "Homebuilding and Renovating", "Self Build and Design" and "BuildIt". They're not specifically about renovation or about DIY, but contain lots of useful general information and adverts for books on the subject.

There is one bookseller which specialises in this market;

but I must thoroughly recommend Mark Brinkley's book; "The Housebuilder's Bible". Absolutely crammed full of useful information, facts and figures. Available from Blackberry, Amazon or directly from him at

It might be a bit difficult to keep asking questions on here as I have a large farmhouse that needs renovating and as I've never done this before I wanted to get to grips with a good reference book or some sort of guidance that I could wade through. As already stated I'm a noob at renovating and wanted to know where to start and what would be the logical train of events to get through the project efficiently. Perhaps I'll throw up a few questions and see what happens :-)

Thanks for your resp>> Are there any decent web sites (or books) that deal with house

They'll be answered. But some will be rather impolite if you don't stop top-posting.

I'm near completion of renovation and pre-1800 stone farmhouse so hopefully I can help with some bits.

That's how groups like this are intended to operate - you ask questions, others answer, we all learn. It would be disappointing if you denied us the benefit of this ((plus what Mike said about top-posting).

As someone said, you'll get hassled by the post-style anoraks unless you conform to their insistence on bottom posting only.

sounds like youre going to have a lot of qs then.

how about starting with:

  1. things that must be done to prevent robbery etc
  2. things that must be done to prevent further deterioration
  3. things that need doing soon
  4. things that need doing some time
  5. things that dont but would be nice

you can fill in more categories etc.

If you want to get the hang of any particular area, go to google groups uk.d-i-y and search for your keywords.
