Hanging heavy Rugs on Walls

For soundproofing purposes, I intend hanging heavy rugs on some party walls running the full height of the wall from ceiling to floor. I may well line them with specialist soundproofing panels

which are

2mm thick but damn heavy.

The walls actually have coving as well as 3inch skirting board, so I'm just wondering what the best way of hanging them would be ?? From the ceiling ? Or maybe using something like a curtain pole on a batton.

Don't really want to bring the (drylined) walls or ceiling crashing down so all input welcomed :)

Do you have access to the loft space? If so, then drill down from the loft space, through the plasterboard at several points between the joists. Now, using wood placed over the joists and screwed on, put long bolts through to hold a batten or something onto the roof, through the holes. Alternatively, if you can get the batten screwed into the joist through holes in the plaster, that can work too.

What is the price of this stuff?

I would attach the soundproof material directly to the wall. The web site gives the glue for it. Then I would create a thin frame that does not touch the rubber material, pinned to batons screwed to the ceiling and floors, and attach Fermacell drylining

The Fermacell and frame should NOT touch the material glued to the wall. Sorted.

We did something similar for decorative reasons, maybe not as large or heavy. My wife sewed some loops to the back of the rug a few cm from one end through which is threaded a piece of 18mm dowel. This is then suspended from some decorative hooks. You could arrange things so that the hooks are also hidden.

It's probably going to be significantly more effective free-hanging. Connected to the wall, it just adds to the mass of the wall, and absorbs a bit of sound through it. Free-hanging, it has an extra air-gap, which is very good.

Take down the plasterboard on your side. Fill with rockwool batts to 3/4 full. In the remaining gap hag the rubber matting making sure there is an air gap on each side. Replace the plasterboard with either Fermacell, or two sheets of normal gypsum with staggered joins.

Hello Ian,

What exactly do you mean by free-hanging ??
