I suppose what the plasterboard [sheetrock ?] is applied to is the primary question . If it is wooden studs then replace the plasterboard with say
3/4" plywood . One further consideration is what is in the cupboards ,groceries are one thing, plates and general ceramics is a totally different kettle of fish .
