I wouldn't spend that much on a phone either. I only have it because wife & daughter gifted to me for birthday.

I have neither a wife or daughter so that cannot happen.

However I can tell you about the apprentice who was gifted a car by his girlfriend.

He caught her getting shagged by another lad at a party and she bought him a car so that he would not split up with her.

Young love at it's best.

Doesn't seem like either bloke f***ed any sense into her.

I'm not prepared to spend more than £12 on a phone, but I understand s martphones are handy for people who run their lives through them.

I could not work without getting certain emails or downloads when on site. It need not be a phone, but a smartphone is the easiest way to do it.

eg lift not working. No idea what is needed until I get there. A new contactor is needed, I take a photo of it, sent it to the office and await a text with the address of where to pick a new one up from.

All doable from my old S4 Mini, but my eyesight is getting older and the bigger screen of the A5 is a help.

Main use my phone gets is as a camera. Since most carry their phone when out, always available. Unlike a discrete camera only. And of course easy to transfer a pic to any PC via Wi-Fi.

Good luck at finding a low price basic phone with a decent camera.

Oh - it also works hands free in the car via Wi-Fi.

I got my first mobile about 30 years ago because of work. If someone wants to offer work in my line, they would generally want a quick answer.

And I'm willing to bet these days details (if you accept) would also be sent electronically.

None of this would matter if you work in an office. But for those who work on a site, a smart phone would be essential.

Fine ranting about modern technology. Except where you get crapped on by not having it. ;-)

That's an Alcatel U3. Rather a small screen.

I got a Virgin Alcatel U5 last year for £55+£10 airtime which, while it has some limitations, is quite useable.

I got my first mobile phone around 25 years ago.

I can remember that when making a call it was £1 for the first 60 seconds of the phone call and then 50p for the next thirty seconds.

If the call costs were the same today I would spend my weeks wage in a couple of days.

And of course there is my Mum. She always asks where I am when she calls my mobile. 25 years later she still does the same thing.

There's the answer to your original problem. Should've asked your mum to phone you Sunday morning at 8am.

She would still ask where I was.

I just say "at work" as she is geographically challenged and has no idea where towns and cities are.

Depends where you went to bed on Saturday night

Or how many girlfriends you have.

Well 3 weeks ago it was at Geoff's (CET) in Watford and 2 weeks ago it was at TMH's daughters up North in red rose county. Last weekend I was at Lou's.

This week I am staying at home.

Which camera app do you use? The ones I tried for Android are quite limited. The best I can find is Open Camera but its user interface / GUI leaves room for improvement.

It's a Samsung Galaxy I have, and the Samsung PC software is dreadful. Use My Phone Explorer. That brings up the storage on my phone like any other. Links by cable or Wi-Fi.

It's also useful for editing the contacts etc. Or sending a test from home

- if you prefer a proper keyboard to a phone one. And for backing things up.
