Good Newsreader

Any recommendations for a good, preferably free, newsreader ?

I'm using Agent at present but they appear to have seriously crippled the free version.

Many people really rate Agent, but I must say I've never got on with it.

I like Mozilla, or if you just want the client without the browser, Thunderbird.

I quite like Gravity, which went freeware after the original commercially based company (Microplanet) folded, and is still unofficially updated.

's what Agent *should* be by now. Free but donations welcome. It's still in beta but is reasonably stable now.

I used Agent for many years but Dialog has so many features that Agent still lacks - multiple servers, scripting, scoring etc. etc. Can't fault it:-)

How do you plumb it in? I am using AOL, I gather that could be a problem. (I just can't stand the AOL groups interface.) I use Mailgate for simplicity but it tends to go off line quite often in the wee hours. I've an idea it occurs around times of major viral outrages. It does limit the groups to European orientations though.

I am a very happy user of Virtual Access. It is no longer being updated AFAIK but does a very good job for me as email and newsgroup client. Info at

Tried that, and Agent, but couldn't get on with either - partly because I couldn't get used to having to 2xclick or hit return to get the message body, partly because I couldn't find a way of getting either to show threads sorted by most recent. Thunderbird is a pain to use from the keyboard (and I hate having to use the mouse) because of the way they've mapped the Return key into both show-message-in-new-window and toggle-expand/contract-thread. OE actually does more or less what I want, except recently its taken to hanging on displaying messages and I have to cancel with Escape then move to another message and back to the one I'm trying to read (sometimes several times) to get at the message: I don't know if this is OE (recently 'up'graded to IE6) or NTL (text.news.ntlworld.com) brokenness, or something else (thunderbird seems to be gobbling up >90Megabytes of RAM, and I've 'only' got 256M, so the system's swapping horribly.)

back to PC-Pine, I guess :-(

John,

Try 62.253.162.114 instead of the NTL address you quoted. It appears that NTL have pointed 'text' at the same overburdened servers that are utterly bogged down with binaries, etc. Or use the Berlin news.individual.net service like so many of us on NTL. :-)

(And I use xnews - free and reasonable but it seems that the author isn't really doing b=much to it these days.)

I'm afraid I have no idea when it comes to AOL (spits). With any normal ISP, you just point your news client to your news server, and it runs on NNTP via TCP-IP.

Well if your PC is running a proper operating system Knode works well. :-) If you are unfortunate to be using Bill's stuff try 40tude.

has a lot in common with Agent. HTH

Agent can be set to download message bodies with the headers without having to do that. Apologies if I've misunderstood your problem.

I assume you mean showing the most recent at the top - Agent can't do that (not sure about the latest version). Dialog *can* do that.

I think it defaults to threads sorted by most recent, and clicking on the first column header will thread / unthread the messages.

In the tools / global options config page, select preferences and there`s a tick box to display articles with a single click

This is an option with Gravity - I have it set to show the body with one mouse click.

An ex OE user? New to old, when each thread is then old to new, is actually quite an odd concept if you think about it.

Bet you "show all" rather than use display filters too? :-þ

But seriously - Gravity takes a bit of getting into because there are quite a few options, but it is worth a couple of days perseverance to get it how you like and then all the lovely features can be seen and used.

Turnpike, not free, but cheap (unless a Demon-ite), and much improved (over the clunky Win3.1 look of V5) when they introduced Version 6 a couple of years ago.

Very standards compliant, and a good support newsgroup, where the developers read and post as well.

Unfortunately when I changed computers I lost the un lock code I had paid for and was unable to get any response from their help desk on the problem so gave up in disgust.

I'll give the free version a run I think

The version I used up until recently was the free version. Swopping computers again I downloaded their latest free version and it is well crippled over the paid up version. $34.00 is too much IMHO for something like this.

I've just had a play with Dialog, having been a long-time Agent fan but very disappointed in what seems to have been missed out of the infamous 2.0...

Very similar in look and feel, and has multiple server support and multiple identities (ta-da!). However, I so wish it had nested email folders.
