Where I live lots of items are left in and around the bin store for people to have if they want them, usually after someone leaves their flat. Some of the things could be quite useful like a set of dining chairs or a TV stand. If they aren't taken someone puts them in one of the bins or the council takes them away.

I watched one walk up my path (I was talking to a neighbour in his garden) and take a battery a mate had dropped off to me a bit earlier, until I suggested he put it back (which he did with loads of apologies, they don't want any 'imperial involvement'. ;-)

Same with a neighbour and some tubular radiators he had stood on their sides inside his front fence (not long unloaded them from his minibus and was letting the drain). Again I suggested they put them back and pointed out the fairly sophisticated CCTV system that covered the entire area. They did with no hesitation or questions.

I think they are just opportunists rather than thieves as such but may work on the 'it's easier to get forgiveness than permission' ethic. ;-)

Given that's it's illegal to have them arranged and to be collected by persons without an environmental waste carrier licence[1], it seems somewhat tolerated to have randoms driving around helping themselves, as a "business" - they don't get stopped.

Well, indeed. You wouldn't want to have to take up a fashionable new diet and feel obliged to show the exotic and fanciful thing off to all and sundry, so as not to suffer the stigma of having a boring, stick-in-the-mud traditional diet like everybody else, now would you? ;-)

When did I do that then? I am an ethical vegan and so it's far from being 'just' to do with what I eat. In fact, what I eat is more a function of what I can't eat and I can't eat something that doesn't belong to me and will have to suffer, be exploited and be killed for me to do so. I mean, who *would* do such a thing?

You are not open minded enough to see the damage done to children's brain development through consuming a vegan diet.

The current error in your ways is being myopic to animal welfare, and abuse those who disagree with you. Another error is claiming to be an ethical vegan whilst keeping pets and feeding them meat products.

one can build a high current copper strip welder (used for building Ni battery packs. One needs to drill the secondary winding out (carefully) and use a thick cable for the 2 turns secondary. There is am impressive YOUTUBE by an ingenius builder.
