Going to be really cold in Canada next week, -33 (max!) in Calgary
It's been colder out west than that already.
Right now it's -40C in Whitehorse.
But these things change rapidly, when a Chinook comes through. A Chinook wind can bring the temperature up above 0C again.
When it gets to -40C, there will be the requisite "boiling water experiments", throwing boiling water in the air and it's frozen when it hits the ground.
On dairy cattle, if it gets cold enough, the ears can freeze and fall off. The farmers have some fun with this. You don't see too many pictures of cattle without ears, because that's probably considered bad husbandry. But according to my sister, some cattle like to stay out of the barn in weather like that and they don't want to stay inside. One of the kids belonged to 4H club, and so they kept a cow for a year as part of the program. And you learn all sorts of trivia about how to take care of cows. If the ears fell off your cow, that's probably a demerit.
