I am considering making a wall at home out of frameless glass which Ithink will look pretty good. This will replace a partition wall whichwas removed when the house was renovated in the 1970's. The result isI have a large landing at the top of the stairs where the original 2ndbedroom use to be, so strictly speaking I can only describe it as a 1bed house when I come to sell. Using glass will maintain the feelingof space and light which I don't want to lose in my already compacthouse, but create a 2nd bedroom.I have considered using glass partitions commonly used in offices, butthese are usually made to a standard size to fit under suspendedceilings, or to be as high as a door frame, plus the aluminium frameswill look a little commercial in a house in my opinion, so i wasthinking about using plate glass.The glazing will be approximately 8' high, two pieces mounted at 90degrees to each other, one 2' and the other 3' long.I appreciate that I will need special glass, but not sure on theprecise type, should it be toughened or laminated ? Also whatthickness will it need to be and would the sizes i have outlined beexpensive ?

Is toughened safety glass the same as laminated, or are they 2 different types of glass but essentially do the same thing ?

Two different things. Toughened glass is created through a heat process. Laminated involves bonding two sheets together with a layer of plastic between them.

To clarify further. Toughened glass goes off, and it creates thousands of razor-sharp edged cubes of glass. It's very hard to kill yourself with these, but they are very, very unfunny to tread on in bare feet, or try to catch yourself with your hands on.

Laminated glass on the other hand if it's broken stays more or less in one bit, even if bent. There may be small shards and bits that fly off, but these are typically small, and few in number.

Well I for one wouldn't want to watch a pair of 65 yr old wrinklies falling out of their corsets and bloomers!
