Suggest you look up total internal reflection, TIR, in a physics and/or optics area. It's behind what's used in the fancy LED Xmas trees etc.

You can buy cheap coloured led's easily now - people use them to trick up their computers & chav-chariots. Alternatively, try a 'cold cathode tube' for a longer unit size. All you need to do is work out how to conceal one of these in the wall or cabinet behind the shelf.

What is it youre googling for? You need toughened or laminated glass, suitable brackets, ultrabright LEDs and a small power supply for the LEDs. Single colour LEDs are far cheaper than white and much longer lived, and come in red, orange, yellow, green. More expensive are turquoise blue and violet. 20p each is about right for the cheaper colors, more like =A31 a piece for the.g/t/b/v ones.

You should just about be able to squeeze the LEDs into a 1/4" strip of wood rnuning along the back of the glass, though that is cutting it tight.
