Back in the '90s, the company that I was working for often used galvanised cable tray. Where they cut and joined it, they painted the damaged area with Galvafroid. I would think that the zinc spray is something similar.

Floating plastic balls across the whole surface of the tanks stopped that, but it took a long time for many platers to adopt the idea.
It wasn't 'running' as I visited on a saturday.
