Gas regulations - Fitting a balanced flue boiler?

Can someone please tell me if the gas regulations allow for the replacement of an already fitted Baxi solo fanned flue boiler with an older Potterton PrimaB balanced flue? I was speaking to someone corgi registered but they weren't sure if the regulations allowed and would need to contact corgi.

Of course. Buy would you want to?

Parents had the Baxi fitted but want the Potterton put back. They say the noise of the fan flue is driving them nuts (especially at night) and have lost the extra warmth in the kitchen that the Potterton boiler itself provided. There's no arguing with them, they want the old one put back!

how about just swapping a fanned flue for a balanced flue ?

Dunno about Gas Regulations, but the Building Regulations say that any replacement gas boiler should have an efficiency of 78%. If the old boiler had an efficiency of this or above, then it can be properly reinstalled, although IIRC the chances of an older non-fanned-flued boiler achieving this is low.

Yes, provided the location for the balanced flue was compliant which it might not be because the clearances required would be much larger.

However why you would not replace the (assumed dead) Baxi Solo with another modern fan flued applinace mystifies me. Even if the old boiler was free it will eventually cost more in wasted gas.

What about a kitchen radiator and a quality modern quiet boiler?

Ok thanks for that. What would be the case if, for e.g, you wanted your existing boiler moved to another corner of the wall. Does the same building regs apply in that situation?

Perhaps you could arrange for a timeswitch so it switches off at night? And to have a rad fitted in the kitchen?

Relying in incidental heat ridiculous. Incidental heat also heats the place in summer. Top quality boilers tend have quieter fans.

You may find that applies to new appliances. Old cars would never meet modern day regs for new cars in safety, emission, efficiency, etc, yet you can re-con the engines, etc and still run them.

They have to apply to the new regs in installation. A guard over the flue oulet, etc.

Hence the word "replacement", meaning a replacement.
