Found some old articles on the Garmin web forum.

Seems I have about 75GB of Garmin files which does seem a tad excessive.

In the process of asking WTF?

Initially it looks as though Garmin Express (the PC based software updater) leaves all the old files behind in a hidden directory and you have to clean up manually (if you even know that they are there).

I set off to do something completely different (look at swap/paging file allocation) but started to wonder where the disc space had gone.

If you download and install 'Everything' only from Voidtools, you can search the whole disk for named files including (hidden files) and sort out what you want.

These are maps downloaded from Garmin by Garmin Express, to a) update the maps on the satnav, and possibly the bike navigation, and b) to keep the maps on the PC to allow BaseCamp to be used without reading the maps off the Garmin devices via a USB connection.

When updating, it will ask if they should be left on the PC after the unit update, or left to do the b) thing...

If you have it, open BaseCamp, go to maps/manage maps -- this will tell which maps BaseCamp knows about, and allow you to see if there is a reason not to uninstall them.

Uninstalling is done via the Windows uninstall system, ideally.

"Just deleting" the files may be counterproductive -- don't know about BaseCamp, but the predecessor MapSource was *very* pick about the registry being just so, and would abort at the slightest registry inconsistency.
