Free Parking - Clerkenwell (ish)

On a weekend, many streets that have paid for resident parking are free then. But dunno Clerkenwell. I'd expect you'd also find free parking on a Saturday a bit closer to Victoria. But regs vary so much you'd need local knowledge. And anything you find online may be out of date, given how fast such things have changed recently. The powers that be seem set to make using a private car in London as difficult as possible.

Hmm, I live in London (used to live in N20!), and I avoid driving into the centre, like the plague! You might find somewhere free to park on a Sunday, but probably not on a Saturday.

If you want to take your bike on the underground. this is worth a look:

And, don't forget the Congestion Charge.

You might find somewhere to park north of Kings Cross and St Pancras, north of the canal around Camley Street, or else east of York Way. I imagine you want to avoid crossing the Deadly Threshold and having to pay the congestion charge. It's a matter of finding somewhere which is a) free/cheap, and b) safe, so your car is still there undamaged when you get back to it.

The last time I parked there, I managed to park easily in Battle Bridge Road or Cheney Road, but that was before the area changed out of all recognition when KX was extended westwards and StP was upgraded for Eurostar - so about

In the spirit of "teach a man to fish":

- most if not all London boroughs have online maps showing parking control areas

- Islington's will send your hopes plummeting. There are a few areas not subject control on Saturdays but not near Clerkenwell. And you might struggle to find a space - especially since they like other boroughs handed out a lot of free permits to NHS and other "key workers".

- heading NE to Hackney is not much better. And I've struggled to find a space near home since they issued 12,000 "key worker" permits.

Thanks everyone, Clerkenwell seems too far south with regards to the congestion charge, but according to Google going through the charge zone saves quite a bit of time.

So I think I will bite the bullet and pay the charge.

Hopefully I can find a free parking space in Pimlico and walk to & fro Victoria or get the 24 bus.

I can then drive on to N20.

Not so green, but I?m taking an 8mm projector to and fro Victoria and picking up a reel mounted 15M multi core in N20, so doing it all via public transport and/or bike isn?t going to cut it unless I quickly knock up a bike trailer 1::^*>>))

Ubless you are travelling in the very early hours it will not be faster going through the zone.

Thanks once again.

In the end, I drove to Pimlico (and got scared out of my wits just before I turned into Lupus Strret from the embankment ad I glanced to my left and saw not one but three trains about to smash into me! Then I realised they were ?parked?. I never knew there were rails there!!

Anyways, (Don?t tell anyone) plenty of spaces in ?Parking permits only Mon

Parked and walked a few hundred yards to the library for a free pee. Then walked back as I?d forgotten my phone, then walked to Victoria.

Discovered the drive belt on the Eumig 501 I Ha borrowed was broken, so my friend still hasn?t viewed any of his films. But we went for a meal and chatted about the olden times (he?s my ex form tutor).

He advised avoiding the zone and gave me local knowledge. So I skirted it up to N20 and then home via the M25 and A24.

And The Falcon (Peugeot 1007 with Twotronic gearbox) only threw a couple of minor hissy fits (auto clutch doing a fair impression of a kangaroo learner driver).

My car has one of those twin clutch (twin layshaft) autos. So a multi-plate wet clutch rather than a torque convertor for moving off from rest, etc.

Not long after getting it, I got stuck in a bad traffic jam on a hot day. Used the handbrake when stationary. After some time, got clutch judder when moving off. I'd guess due to overheating, as it was the only time. But I now put it in neutral or park when stopped for a while - even say at traffic lights. As that disengages the clutch fully.

It is set to drag slightly to give the 'creep' that is normal on an auto in drive. And the handbrake doesn't disengage this.
