Foundations on (sandstone) bedrock.

Any reason not to build house foundations directly on sandstone?

Cheers.

Do you have any choice? What's underneath the sandstone, more sandstone? ;-)

None whatever. You will still need a footing or raft. Possibly added expense in cutting away rock. But the rock may be useful elsewhere.

Can't think of one unless it's really crappy very soft sandstone.

Round here it'll probably be limestone, possibly shale or coal depending where in the repeated carboniferous sequence you are.
