The previous owners had the whole of the downstairs (except the lounge) tiled with expensive (but common sized 12" x 12") Italian marble floor tiles. No expenses were spared (or so they thought) - the whole house modernisations were Designer/Architect stuff!
Anyway, onto the problem...
It would appear that while the owner's backs were turned (my supposition) the flooring crew whacked down the floor tiles on top of the existing Parquet flooring in the hallway. Through foot traffic, several of these tiles have worked loose, so I lifted one and found the Parquet flooring as described.
Was it feasible (at the time) to have laid the tiles onto the Parquet or not? Is/was Parquet considered to be a suitable substrate, or (as I suspect - suspicious, me?) was this "done for quickness"?
I haven't yet lifted any of the Parquet - but suspect it'll be the 1/2" thick stuff (the house is circa 1958).
I'm assuming that the correct course of action is to (carefully) lift the tiles, lift the Parquet, screed the level back up, clean and relay tiles....
Oh what fun and joys ahead!
