Fixing drum bearing water seal on old Hoover washing machine

Hi, I am changing the main drum bearings on an old Hoover washing machine, does anyone know if I should fix the bearing water seal into the aluminum backplate with sealant, or is it ok just pushed in with some silicone grease? It seams quite a loose fit. Don't want it to leak and ruin the new bearings! Thanks

They always leak a bit. There is often a drain hole just behind the seal to let the odd drip out without it having to go through the bearing. If your machine has this, poke something through it to make sure it's clear of any blockage. That can be almost as important as the bearing seal for longevity of the bearings.

Yes, There are two drain holes in the backplate, I was also concerned that the whole seal could rotate, if its not stuck in, the instructions with the bearing kit recommended using Hoover sealant part no. 4060000A to fix the seal in with, but this is an obsolete part number. Would a neutral cure builders silicone would be suitable? or on ebay I have seen something called a Debor sealant for washing machines, would this be any good?
