I've recently finished building a bit of concrete block walling in the garden and want to put some sort of coating on it to make it look less 'blocky'. A proper render is beyond my abilities. I have in mind a cement-sand mix, say 1:5, made down with dilute PVA to make a sloppy mix and slapping it on thickly with a heavy brush. Does this sound reasonable or would it be better just to get some masonry paint from a shed? 'Snowcem' comes to mind from the distant past, but that's probably old hat these days.

The pva will probably show up white when the wall gets wet, and it's impossible to "brush" sand/cement. The brush will just clog up and become an unmanageable lump

I used Focus 10 year smooth masonary protection paint about 3 years ago in similar circumstances and must say I'm delighted with the result. So far looking good for the 10 years.

Just slap some render on any old how, lumpier the better, paint it, and it will look "rustic".
Or some trellis panels will help break up the expanse of wall.
