Fibre 2

Fixing things they've installed, and being prepared to install the latest new shiny product, are disjoint.

For example my current broadband technology was only available from Talktalk (and resellers) on Openreach infrastructure, and despite being installed over a year ago to my telegraph pole, the "full fibre" (FTTP) upgrade is only available from Sky, Talktalk and Vodafone. [And we don't have Virgin media infrastructure]

Meanwhile the most over-promised and under-delivered broadband I've ever had was Plusnet (different town).

A company called Wessex Internet is busy installing a new fibre network in the area around here on the Hampshire-Dorset border , all their own infrastructure with buried fibre. From here they will be moving Southwards into the New Forest. At the moment only their offerings are available on their website but that does say that the network is an open access wholesale network and will be available to other ISP providers . As they are getting £14 Million from the government to provide this high speed gigabyte network perhaps the open access element is a condition of the contract, other new providers elsewhere may be doing things differently.

The cost of contracts as pushed in their commercials were not available via some exchanges including ours, when you found what the rate would really be it was not the bargain they were promoting so we were never tempted to change.

In my case it was 'swinging' a connection, on the same exchange, from one house to another. They never did (and we had multiple visits from Openreach's second line support) achieve more than about a quarter of the speed the originally promised. As the second house was a one year rental, I eventually gave up and accepted that they were a bunch of idiots.

Interesting, I've been with them for many years and never had an issue, I suppose YMMV?

Lots of people have no issues with a range of suppliers. What matters, however, is how good they are fixing things when they do wrong.

Absolutely! I had really poor broadband when I lived in Pewsey and they fixed it within a week, it is essential you follow their instructions as they rely on the output from various tests in their diagnosis.

Yes, I had to give them various test results, but all that proved was I wasn't imagining it. And whatever they tried, it didn't get any better (or worse).

Err... How much are your monthly payments?

Currently 39.20.

Still nothing on their site about fibre here.

I think you need to be expecting fibre to be available in weeks/months away, rather than tomorrow afternoon!

Weeks rather than months

Did you get a satisfactory answer?

After 50 years of having only wires to the houses overhead, as the bt poles were supplied by underground ducts and ntl/virgin was all fttc underground, a greenish fibre containing cable has been strung between the poles and toob have been door to door offering fttp for £25/month.

I am not sure what else they offer, like transfer of phone number.

They are probably only offering broadband for the £25/month, . A phone service will be extra possibly £10 pm .

The fibre to the top of the telegraph pole went in about a year ago.

My experience is 11 months from a fibre cabinet in the road to being available. Then another month for OpenReach to run fibre from a pole to the house.

YMMV

I think it three or four months here...
