Farm jack

I've bought a farm jack to help with levelling my brother's boat, I'm aware of the dangers they present if not treated with respect.

What is the purpose of the horizontal "flag" at the top of the post? The manual calls it the "top clamp/clevis", is it just if you want to squeeze something between the jaw and that clamp?

Surely that handle is designed to take a length of scaffold pole. No farmer works harder than necessary!

Thanks, I knew he had videos about jacks, but hadn't watched that one. Pulling isn't what I'll be using it for.

Seems like his jack doesn't have the "flag"

Looks as though it's a fulcrum for some creative leverage - take a look at the photos of the jack in use, 'emergency rescue''.

And replace the shear-pin with a beefy bolt :-/

Last picture in your link shows the jack used horizontally. I also use it with rope stays to keep the jack upright when it is out of balance.
