Extending cable TV feed

What did you use for "faceplates" ? Unless you used plain plates with a double ended female "f" adapter, I would look there first...

I've had the NTL cable TV service removed some years ago;

- I got fed up with 'pressing the red button' and nothing happening - however at one point I did have a problem similar to what you've described; freezing picture, audio gaps; etc.: I 'phoned the help number and eventually spoke to a girl who said (more or less) '"I'll turn up the wick from this end" - as I watched the screen the artefacts went away! Quite scary actually that 'they' had such control over what I was watching! So, try speaking to NTL;- 'they' may be able to turn up your wick! - I wouldn't mention that you've moved the box; IIRC, that's regarded as a potential revenue stream for NTL.

Although that depends on the specific engineer. When mine was installed, they left me about 40m of cable and some spare connectors so that I could extend the cable into the next room (for the TV) and under the stairs (for cable modem) at my leisure.

Why not ditch ntl and go sky directly?, after all their just a re-distributor of that you can get off-air.

You need a dish. Having a dish in some areas is social death. Fine if you live on a council estate, or behind a big hedge in the country. If you live in a visible period location, things aren't so easy.

A little birdie told me they are ditching those slow, crap unreliable boxes soon, and getting in ones that work. I don't know if it is true.

I don't think they're going to do a wholesale replacement, they're just for new customers. I'm not saying that the engineer told me to fry the machine so that it could get replaced with the new system.

It's happening right now, there is program of STB replacement going on.

Excellent news. Is there any idea on how long it will take? Are the new boxes better? Will they insist on taking away the cable modem and having a combined box, even though my computer isn't in the same room?

We just moved from ntl to sky - the pace box we had used to say Nlt on the display during its startup routine - anybody else noticed that?

Well had a bit more of a fiddle. The faceplates were just standard plates with sockets for sat and TV coax plugs. connected to the incoming source via fly lead.

Disconnected from this, fitted a plug on the end and connected to incoming cable directly, and this solved the problem.

Of course I don't particularly just want this odd cable coming up out of the wall to connect to the incomer, so time for some more fiddling over the weekend

You can get plates with just a barrel connector.

Put an F connector on the fixed cable and screw that on to the back. You will need a deepish box though...

totally absent - or at least show a blank screen and no audio, or the channels is present, but has some breaking up, freezing, poor audio etc.. A mixture of channels , but always the same ones - BBC2, BBC3, Sky1, various Discovery ones, and others.

I think you may have an instability problem in your TV input circuit due to the long cable and some mismatches on the coax. Tends to happen on satellite dish feeds which are too long. Try putting the attenuator back in, either at the TV end or the incoming cable end of the extension to isolate it. Or try a booster in these locations.

Why? A dish does not have to be visible for it to work. Get a decent CAI independant in and see what they can do for you.

Usually pretty straight forward, unless you get a Sky bunny round.

It is my opinion that the infrastructure is the problem.

So use plain F type plates. NOT THE ONES WITH SCREW TERMINALS though!
