Indeed. Marine diesels (also much used with emergency generators) are typically around 1 megawatt. IIRC the largest marine diesel is about
3MW. Ear defenders very advisable.
On my first visit to a coal fired power station in 1967 (four 25MW sets, built in 1949) ear defenders were not required in the turbine hall. The noise level was actually physically painful, to 18yo ears. Needless to say, the older staff were all half-deaf.
