What is the current thinking on Avira antivirus these days. I had to get rid of avast as it was slugging the machine. So far Avira seems better behaved but is it effective?

Yup they installed a man in the middle attack malware that managed to intercept encrypted comms using a flakey security certificate...

Yep. Throw the spyware riddled MS crap away and install Linux Mint.
You do realise that MS are proposing to upgrade W7 to W10? I hope you have lots of spare bandwidth!
Elemental? Linux seems to work quite well on small machines.
