Electric cooker wiring

Hi, in my kitchen I have an very old cooker control unit/socket that desperately needs replacing. I now use gas to cook and I have not got enough sockets in my kitchen so I'd like to replace the old 'box/socket' with a double socket - i.e. use the cooker ring to power normal sockets.

My (very limited) understanding is the isolated ring is just there to avoid the high power drain of a cooker blowing fuses so theoretically it should be OK - shouldn't it?!!

First off the cooker is a radial circuit, not a ring. i.e. there is one large cable, (probably a 6mm), from the CU to cooker switch.

Yes, if you're just replacing the cooker switch for one socket then it's straight forward enough. ..

No problem with the wiring but will your wall box accept a double 13A socket? If not, you may need to remove it and fit a suitable box. I would also fit a 30A fuse in the consumer unit. Another problem could be the safety aspect of having sockets positioned above a gas cooker.

Electrically that's fine, provided the sockets won't leave cables dangling in the soup. If the cable is 6mm (or possibly 4mm), you can run as many sockets off it as you like in the kitchen with a 30-32A MCB/fuse. No need to run as a ring, provided you use thick enough cable (i.e. not 2.5mm).

If the MCB (or fuse?) is reduced to a 32 amp one the OP can connect lots of sockets to the circuit if he wants, using 4sq mm wire.

Or even easier (probably) reduce the MCB to 20 amp and add lots of sockets wired with 2.5sq mm cable.

Chances are it'll be 32A anyway.

Although 20A is a bit tight for a kitchen circuit. 32A would be better. ..
