Dual fuel towel rail valve

Towel radiator is plumbed into ch system and is also fitted with an electric heating element for all year round operation. I need to replace heating element but cannot isolate radiator from ch system. The lockshield valve next to the element does not have a square end on the spindle to allow me to turn spindle to close valve. Valve spindle is round all along its length. How does this valve operate?

We had one of those on a radiator in a previous house- fortunately just one as it was a s*d. I filed some 'flats' on it and as able to use a spanner but I later replaced it. I happen to mention it to a plumber and was told there are special tools for them which are like a collet.

How about a drill chuck?

Not sure, it may loosen its grip as you turn it. I assume the collet tool had a handle, like a tap (the type for threading) holder.

As I posted, I replaced the one I had- it was 2 houses back anyway- and haven?t seen one since. It was an ?odd one out?, I assume the previous owner had replaced it for some reason but I never really gave it much thought as to why etc. - it was just a bit of a pain at the time.

Well the drill chuck could still be attached to a battery drill :)

In my case, I'd probably try the slot in chuck for my SDS drill - it's key operated, so less likely to release when using the body to turn it and it's got a reasonable diameter, so easy to turn.

I wonder if they are intended for rented housing and places that the public have access to, to stop them fiddling with them?
