Yes. We're in the suburbs around Manchester. It is nothing unusual to find a kettle that is clean inside and which is still in use after 20 years.
In fact, because our water is so soft, the water company use phosphate dosing to prevent the water absorbing lead from old pipes. I designed some of the control panels back in the '90s.
Ours is just 1.173 on the dH scale - so very soft.
We're in Cornwall and we've used our dishwasher for over twenty years, never used salt and no adverse affects that I can see. Pete
Can you not tell the DW you are in a soft water area?
While I don’t recall such a setting in our previous DW - a Smeg, about 8 years old at least which died recently- the new one has a setting for it. I looked up the details for our area, then needed to do a conversion as Neff ( the brand used different units) and, on ours, you can use an App or the control panel.
As for water in the salt holder, that is normal. I’ve not filled the new one ( Senior Management did it) but certainly on others ( we’ve had several over the years) you topped the holder up to the brim and the water was displaced.
As I understand it - and I’m happy to be corrected- the salt is used to ‘regenerate’ a small internal water softener.
Now found this. It was deviously hidden away in the menu.
