We have been left a dishwasher in our new house by the old owner, it
works ok but the water does not heat up and the dial is getting stuc at two points along the cycle. Could this be becuase its not reachin the required temperature. Do you think its worth paying £60 (plu coats for parts) for a whirlpool speciliast to come out

Could be the element - could be the temperature sensor. These are relatively easy to eliminate, so take it apart and do some testing....this *is* a DIY group! I doubt it's worth getting the Whirlpool guy out unless it's a relatively new one, even if you are paying in coats (they might be quite nice ones, I guess!).
The Haynes manual is some use - see if the library has one.
What I would do is to get my multimeter out and check the element for continuity. With the power disconnected, remove a wire to the element and check the resistance of the element. If it is open circuit, buy and install a new element.
Otherwise, it would be dangerous to check anything else with the power connected.
