Direct Save Telecom Broadband offers

I am presently with talktalk and recently tried to change from DSL wired BroadBand connection to wireless using a Netgear router. Having run into difficulty and found that talktalk want me to sign up to their geek squad service plus pay premium rate calls to attempt to solve the problem (no guarantees) I googled around, found talktalk hell and a host of other sources which cause me serious misgivings about the likely success of sorting out the problem. As an option for a solution I have been advised that changing to a service from direct Save Telecom might be a sensible solution. However I would not wish to jump from one frying pan into another. Does anyone here have any experience of DST or alternatively know the best way to set up a Netgear DG834GTUK wireles router to work with talktalk. So far we have tried various DNS options and an asortment of other settings but keep getting CHAP failure. I can't afford to lose much more hair!
