I have a Dimplex XLSN Automatic Storage Heater in my hall.
I have found that the input control will only allow the heater to store heat if it is set at more than the half way that the instruction book recommends to start at.
It will store heat if set at more than the half way settings.
Does this indicate a fault with the input control unit?

Sounds like it to me. But if you can get a satisfactory amount of heat out of it don't worry. BTW, I assume you are talking about when the heater is cold. If it's already warm it is working OK.
In the control that you are having to set higher than recommended, there are a set of points, that control the the temperature, and these do slowly burn out over time, which mean that you need to turn the control up higher, to make a connection. You can buy a replacement control unit from UK SPARES, who are an online company, who specialise in spare parts for all electrical parts. They come with a copper thermostat joined to a length of heat resistant wire , which is already connected to the control. This goes under the heater top cover, and hangs down inside the back cover.
Which is a reply, to a question which was asked 11 years ago - likely by now the OP has died/installed gas heating/or moved.
