dimmer switch

I've seen those bodyclock lamp/alarm clocks which emulate sunrise/sunset by slowly getting brighter or dimmer but don't fancy paying £60 plus for one.

What I'm after is an inline dimmer (so I can fit it to my existing bedside light) and all I want it to be able to do is dim slowly to off ( over say 20 mins)

Any thoughts?

TIA

Bad form but this would be ideal if it were 240v

Yes, you can make one from a kit (this is d-i-y, after all).

The following link shows one such kit (there are others):

Rotary dimmer on a very reducing gearing from a hamster wheel.

Train hamster to run anticlockwise at dusk and clockwise at dawn.

Alternatively, a wire-wound resistance in an insulated container of mercury with a small hole in the bottom. As the mercury runs out, the resistance increases and the light dims.

I bought one of the alarm clocks from boots at about this time last year - it was christmas gift stock, so was about 70% off when we got it

- might be worth a look.

Especially as they're not up to much. The alarm's only accurate to around 10 minutes, and tends to advance from one day to the next as there's no dead zone on the knob used to adjust both the alarm hand and the time hands. Also prone to sulking requiring unplugging and plugging back in.
