There is actually some sense in it if you read it in context, that the women are eating more protein (not just food in general) to prevent weight gain. Several studies have shown that eating more protein actually increases satiety (feeling of having eaten enough), so the over all result is that you eat less, and perhaps lose a bit of weight as a consequence.

The Atkins diet, in essence. Also, if you keep the carbohydrate input low enough, the body will use stored fat for energy, as it's easier than digesting protein.
