I have a Dell Laptop with a Hard Drive of 283 GB I am toying with going for a Solid State Drive and have been looking at 500GB I realise though that I am only using 125GB but old advice was to keep to about 60% of total capacity (I think) If I go for a SDD do I need spare space? Should I go for a 500GB or will a cheaper 250GB be adequate? I don't atnicipate anything massive on the Laptop and I always have a 1TB external. I am really after advice on performance benefits of having spare space.

I have taken a giant leap and ordered a 500GB and a USB to SATA Lead so that I can clone my HDD.

50% /home/leo/VirtualBox VMs

Looks like 120GB - 35GB for programs and 18G for a winXP installation in a VirtualBox used ......

And the rest totally unused.

I think my lappy is even smaller - 60GB

You main problem is 'DELL'. Nothing is standard re cables and power supplies.

I keep source on an SSD, and write the object files there too. Spinning rust is just too slow for a 16 thread compilation.

BTW I have a 5MB (yes, 5 million) disc here. I keep it to frighten the kids with.
