My bony wrist also stays pretty stationary, but instead of resting on a hard desk, it has a nice soft cushion.

No, those had red and infrared reflective strips at right angles. I used one with a Sun (graphic) workstation.
I move the hand with the wrist on the protrusion.
I move the whole hand holding the mouse with the wrist end of the arm resting on the protrusion.
I can move the cursor across the whole screen simply with hand movements and I no longer get RSI.
I found those quite difficult to use, as I do touch pad cursor control on a laptop.
They basically include a camera a correlation auto tracker - they photograph a reference patch of surface and then search for it in a new position every few ms to work out where it has moved to. (the kind of tech that in the late 80s used lots of high end ASICs to provide auto tracking on military thermal imaging systems and head up displays, and cost 10 or 100s or £k!)
