Is your belief system so weak that you think the mere words of others must be suppressed?

Only on non-related groups?

Had the original post been marked OT or the thread just mutated to cover such topics it might be more tolerable to more folk here?

Believe that or not. ;-)

In a case where none of the groups posted to have anything to do with religion I'd say yes. Wishing someone a happy holiday is one thing. Posting a prayer is another.

The suggestion was that the poster should "keep it to themselves"... Which is in step with the PC thinking that if your belief system is weak you need to go around telling everyone that almost everything offends you and must not be mentioned or displayed.

If the OP had been one of the regulars here who happens to be Christian, there would have been no problem.

Please, please, please, not again, there is/was no damned Jesus, just an illegitimate child born of a frustrated woman whose husband was so old he couldn't get it up so she went to the local gardener for comfort!

And so her husband wouldn't know she was playing away, she convinced him that it was a virgin birth, and like a mug he believed her, the fool, just like all the others!

Indeed. And anyway, we shouldn't juts be buying into a religion like going to B&Q, out with the angel grinder and lest MAKE one, if its needful.

Strikes me that if he suffers by his chosen conviction then the OP's god is verily a vindictive one.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember George saying something like:

I'll say this once.

Fuck off.

If all and sundry who have a problem with this just either killfiled the poster or ignored the post, there wouldn't be a problem now, would there? You know from past postings, that this person will be wishing you a merry CHRISTmas and praying for you immortal souls.

Whether you believe or not in the Virgin birth of Jesus or even in Jesus Himself is no reason to vilify this person who does. And if the mere mention of His Name sends you into such a tizzy.....why are you celebrating the holiday anyway? I understand if you are Jewish and celebrate Hannukah, another type of relgious celebration, but to claim to be an atheist and rant that anyone who believes in ANYTHING should not be tolerated, why are you wasting your energy on fighting Christmas? It shouldn't exist, per your reasoning, so ignore the sentiments, ignore the lights, go to work, don't take the bonus, and eat a bologna sandwich in the company of the anger you spew to someone who actually has a belief system in place.

Ever read Amiri Baraka's "Hard Facts."

"In the poem ÒWhen WeÕll Worship JesusÓ (from Hard Facts), Baraka attacks capitalist AmericaÕs tradition of Christianity. The religion with which the ÒbeastsÓ of Africa had been domesticated into slaves who would endure their suffering as a race (using the suffering of Jesus as a model) for the existential good of their souls. Baraka takes the proverbial quote by Karl Marx that ÒReligionÉis the opium of the people,Ó and puts it in historical context for African-Americans:

we aint gonna worship jesus cause jesus dont exist xcept in song and story except in ritual and dance, except in slum stained tears or trillion dollar opulence stretching back in historyÉ.. stop moanin about jesus, stop sweatin and crying and stompin and dyin for jesus (Baraka Reader, 253-254).

Baraka goes beyond criticizing Christianity and its role in the oppression of African-Americans. He goes on to offer a new religion to African-Americans based on them and their past as well as their struggles and beauty:

we worship the strength in us we worship our selves we worship the light in us we worship the warmth in us we worship the world we worship the love in us we worship our selves we worship nature we worship ourselves we worship the life in us, and science, and knowledge, and transformation of the visible world (Ibid)."

It is not welcome in uk.d-i-y

Now could anyone making further follow ups in this thread remove uk.d-i-y to your x-posting list

There is no problem. There was an OT post pushing what someone believes in a d-i-y group. OT posts aren't uncommon and the responses predictable.

I didn't. But what if I didn't want someone interfering with my soul?

Personally, I'm not. No sign of it here, neither in the house nor fridge.

How would I know if I was an atheist or not?

People can believe it what they like, just don't lay it on me (here). If I want to learn about religion I will go to a place that will teach me.

How about just trying to ignore it (and religion).

There is nothing reasoned about it if you don't 'believe'.

Do you welcome double glazing and other random strangers offering you random stuff, into your home, heart and onto your computer screen?

If I look at the TV schedule and see something Xmas related I am pre warned and can (and do) choose not to view it. Something titled 'Christmas Eve' on a d-i-y group could have been about anything.

Cheers, T i m
